What is HHFKA?
The Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act updates the meal patterns and nutrition standards for the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs to align them with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This rule requires schools to increase availability of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and reducing the level of sodium, saturated fat and trans fat in meals. Changes Your Student May Notice: Lunch meals will consist of five components: whole grains, meat/meat alternate, fruit, vegetable and milk. We will encourage students to select all five components to receive a balanced meal. Every student will be required to take a 1/2 cup fruit or vegetable at breakfast and lunch every day. We will continue to offer a wide variety of dark leafy greens, and red-orange vegetables along with legumes such as black beans, pinto beans, and garbanzo beans. |
